What is NDIS Funding?

The NDIS provides funds to disabled people to live their life as other people and achieve their life goals. Participants pay for supports and services from the budget individually allocated to them.

NDIS Funding Categories

Supports and services for participants fall into three categories: core, capital and capacity building.

  • Core: support to complete daily living activities
  • Capital: support for an investment, such as assistive technologies, equipment and home or vehicle modifications, or funding for capital costs (e.g. to pay for Specialist Disability Accommodation).
  • Capacity building: support to help participants learn new skills and build confidence

What types of supports are funded?

The types of supports that the NDIS may fund for participants include:

  • daily personal activities
  • transportation to enable participation in community, social, economic and daily life activities
  • successful transition to workplace, employment preparation or finding and keeping a job
  • therapeutic supports including behaviour support
  • assistance with household tasks to enable participants to maintain a healthy home environment
  • professional assistance for participants in need of equipment assessment, set up and training
  • home modification design and construction
  • mobility equipment, and
  • vehicle modifications.

There are some kinds of supports that will not be funded or provided by the NDIS

The NDIS cannot fund support that is:

  • not related to a person’s disability
  • the responsibility of another government system or community service
  • related to daily living expenses that are not included in participant’s support needs, or
  • is likely to cause harm to the participant or pose a risk to others.
